Donadoni will not resign as Italy coach

VIENNA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Italy coach Roberto Donadoni refused to give up his post though being heavily criticized after the world champions quarterfinal exit from Euro 2008.
The Azzurri suffered a 4-2 shootout defeat to Spain on Sunday after a dull 0-0 draw on 120 minutes, and the consensus in the Italian media on Monday has commanded a resignation of Donadoni and asked World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi to return.
"I don't know if you guys have fresher news than me. But I'm calm without worries about it," Donadoni told a press conference in Italy's training base at Baden, Austria starting 1100 local time on Monday.
"I've not seen the reason I should resign. That seemed an excessive request," he said. "I don't see why decisions like this should be made on a game won or lost on penalties."
The former AC Milan star extended his contract with the Italian FA (FIGC) for two more years before the Azzurri's Euro 2008 opening match, which will keep Donadoni in reign till 2010 World Cup and allow the extension to be terminated by either party should results at Euro 2008 be deemed unsatisfactory.
After Sunday's exit, rumors doubting on Donadoni's future again came around as Italian football boss declined to give support to the under-pressure coach.
"We decided that it was not the right time to make a decision right after the game," said Giancarlo Abete. "We will meet in the coming days to decide on the future. And I should talk the assignment issue with other men in the federation as well."
Donadoni, however, though the media had read too much into Abete's words.
"I think the fact that he doesn't say much might be part of his character," he said on Monday. "We'll see over the next 10 days. It's useless to make calculations."

Inter Milan hires Jose Mourinho

REIGNING Serie A champion Inter Milan named a new coach Monday, appointing Jose Mourinho to replace the fired Roberto Mancini.

Mourinho, who was fired by Chelsea in September, has been out of the game since then, biding his time until finding a suitable role to take.
Mourinho found that job with Inter, which parted ways with Mancini last week after months of speculation regarding his job status.
“The Portuguese coach has signed a three-year contract and will work alongside Rui Farias, Silvino and Andrei Villas Boas,” Inter said in a statement. “The assistant coach will be Giuseppe Baresi.
“(We are) thanking Roberto Mancini and his staff for the success obtained in four seasons as the leader of the team. All of Internazionale has the great pleasure to welcome Jose Mourinho and his coaches.”
Mourinho has big shoes to fill, as Mancini coached Inter to the Serie A title in each of the last three seasons.
Mancini’s departure was a protracted affair, with reports last week suggesting there had been a breakdown in communication between the boss and president Massimo Moratti.
Inter cited Mancini’s announcement in the wake of their Champions League defeat to Liverpool on March 11 that he would step down at the end of the season as a crucial factor.
Mancini reversed his decision 24 hours later, and went on to lead Inter to their third straight Serie A title. But after much speculation, his departure was confirmed Thursday evening.
Mourinho has long been linked with the post at the San Siro. He was appointed as manager of Chelsea in 2004 after leading Porto to the Champions League title.
He led Chelsea to back-to-back Premier League titles, but could not bring the Champions League trophy to Stamford Bridge in just over three years at the London club.
